Prior to today's game against the lowly Detroit Lions, the New Orleans Saints were just an after thought when it came to odds of winning the 2010 Super Bowl. New England, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Minnesota, the New York Giants, San Diego were all among the oddsmakers favorites to win the championship. But following New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees' amazing 6 touchdown game, the Saints odds of winning the 2010 Super Bowl have gotten all the more desirable.
Heading into Week 1 of the 2009 NFL season, the Saints were listed with 20/1 odds of winning the Super Bowl at Sportsbetting.com for a payout potential of $2000 on every $100 bet.
That was before Brees' big day.
Brees finished with 358 passing yards in the 45-27 victory at the Superdome. Jeremy Shockey caught two of the scoring throws, with Devery Henderson, Robert Meacham, Marques Colston and Heath Evans the other recipients.
"It's not just Drew Brees," says Don Shapiro of Gambling911.com. "He's also got the support including Jeremy Shockey and this team looks like one of the best in the league on paper."
Sure they played Detroit this weekend but they'll be tested next week on the road in Philadelphia. New Orleans might also luck out if Donovan McNabb does not start due to his injured rib.
Brees had a chance to become just the sixth man in history to throw for an NFL-record seven touchdowns in a game, but that wasn't to be as the clock was winding down. He completed 26 of his 34 passing attempts on the day.
Joe Kapp was the last quarterback to throw for seven scores and that happened 40 years ago against the Minnesota Vikings.
Watch for the New Orleans Saints odds to win the 2010 Super Bowl to be slashed somewhat but the payout will remain in double digits this week. A win in Philadelphia will almost certainly result in single digit odds so you might want to lock in this week's odds once they become available.
