Sports betting has never been as popular as it is today with punters having a number of exciting markets to wager money on their favourite sport. It gives us the chance to enjoy the action and turn a profit while doing so, but fully understanding sports betting is key to beating the bookies.

With a carefully placed bet to sensible stakes you can add extra drama to the occasion. A big horse race, such as the King George, Grand National or Gold Cup, is a thrilling spectacle but correctly picking the winner and cheering your selection across the line is something special. It’s not without its dangers, of course, so managing your bets is important, but if you are shrewd enough it’s entirely possible to boost your bank balance simply through your love of sport.

The same applies to football, boxing, tennis, darts, snooker, MMA and much more. If you do the necessary research and fancy your opinions highly enough, you can back yourself with cash to beat the bookie. Being right is satisfying, landing a pay-out for being right is truly unique.

Modern gamblers have a number of convenient ways to bet. From visiting the betting office on any high street to staying at home and taking advantage of online gambling through your computer, you have options. Mobile betting continues to grow in popularity and it’s little wonder as it allows you to make a wager whenever you want and on whatever you want. On the sofa, travelling home from work, shopping – if you have your mobile device or tablet and a reliable internet connection you can place a bet with any respected online bookmaker.

What should you bet on? Well, that’s where the options really begin to show themselves. Football fans are spoiled for choice with match winner, both teams to score, correct score, first goal scorer, total goals, handicap, total cards, half time/full time, Asian handicap, draw no bet, and hundreds more besides.

There’s something to suit every type of punter but none are quite as popular as the industry’s favourite – the accumulator as it can wield big wins.

A type of bet with a rich history, it’s beautiful in its simplicity and the reason it appeals to backers the world over is it gives us the option to bet small and win big. It’s very easy to do too. Simply pick out the selections you fancy from your sport of choice and bunch them together in one bet, the more picks added the greater the prize pot.

How it Works: a Football Example

Accumulator betting can be used on any sport with just about every bookmaker, but we’ll take football on January 1 2019 as an example of just how great accumulator betting is.

Everton host Leicester on New Year’s Day at Goodison Park with the home win priced as odds-on favourite. You can back that as a single and hope The Toffees do a job, but you’re profit margin on the bet won’t be too impressive with a £1 stake paying £1.95.

Accumulator bets can be placed on any football market from any league and can be extended to cover any major sport. There are risks and pitfalls, as with any form of gambling, but those who seek knowledge can read more at FBS’s acca betting guide which explains a fair share of jargon and seemingly complicated terms. For those who prefer to keep it simple by picking their selections and adding them to an acca are often the players who get the most out of accumulator betting.

Be bold and place an accumulator however and the returns start to grow. Add others to your bet slip alongside Everton, such as Arsenal to beat Fulham, Tottenham to beat Cardiff, Aston Villa beat QPR, West Brom beat Blackburn and Middlesbrough to beat Derby from the Championship and you’ll now have something to get excited about.

As an accumulator is one bet all selections must win. So, of the six, if five teams get a result and one draws – tough luck, your bet will be settled as a loser, but you’ll only drop the stake you agreed - £1 in the example above. But, if all six selections do as expected and win you will land a £44.66 prize. The possible pay-out grows as your stake and selections increase, but remember, so does the risk involved.
