Sports Betting in Washington State
Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to abolish decades long prohibition of sports betting back in May 2018, states have been scrambling to amend their own laws in order to allow sports wagering businesses to operate. State licensed books will be required to pay a steep licensing fee and taxes that, to date, have been in the double digits.
Not all states are looking to offer sports betting however. Washington appears to be among those in this category.
Washington State is currently the only state that makes placing an online bet a Class C felony.
Sixth Legislative Dist. Sen. Michael Baumgartner (R-Spokane) told KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson that while he doesn’t see sports betting on the table anytime soon for Washington, he believes allowing it would be a good move.
“I don’t think it’ll happen in the near future — it’s something that I think should happen,” he said.
