A House hearing on how to better structure sports betting at the federal level is slated for this coming Thursday.  Among those in attendance will be the National Football League, American Gaming Association and casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson's anti-online poker coalition.

The House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday on Capitol Hill. The hearing will be live streamed here.

The hearing is set after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to abolish decades long prohibition of sports wagering, thus opening the door for each state to offer the activity provided they amend their current laws.  To date, only a handful have done so.

Adelson and his organization have long fought to keep online poker from becoming legal in the States.  CardPlayer.com suggests his opposition will continue to target poker and casino games.  He has rarely spoke on the issue of Internet sports betting.

His coalition released this statement:

“Three states have already legalized internet gambling and many more are actively considering following suit,” says the Coalition’s website. “Given the potential for money laundering, terrorism financing, fraud and other criminal activity, participation by minors, exploitation of individuals with a gaming addiction, and the impact on jobs and economic activity, Congress must act now to protect American families from predatory internet gambling.”

For states including New Jersey, Nevada, Delaware and, more recently, Pennsylvania, have legalized online casino games.
