Washington, DC Councilmember Jack Evan’s newly introduced bill would legalize sports betting while also placing regulations.

He will be able to cite West Virginia's early success with sports betting where the Hollywood Casino took in more than $600,000 its first weekend of being opened.  That casino is within driving distance of DC.

In his statement, Evans says he hopes that this will bring more revenue to the District, rather than giving money to other jurisdictions.

The bill is being referred to the Committee on Finance and Revenue. Co-introducers are Councilmembers Cheh, Gray and Todd.

It is unclear where sports betting would be permitted in the District.
