The San Diego Chargers odds to win the 2010 Super Bowl were set at +850, the same as the Pittsburgh Steelers.  They are therefore tied for the second shortest odds at SBG Global.

Unless the Chargers completely self-destruct for no apparent reason, they should perform well above last year's .500 mark.

Chargers fans can rejoice with a healthy LaDainian Tomlinson and the return of Shawne Merriman.  Much of this team has remained intact and they play in what is perhaps the weakest division of the NFL.

While Oakland and Denver will likely end up in the quagmire, there is every reason to believe that the Kansas City Chiefs under new leadership and with Matt Cassel as quarterback could suddenly become competitive.

This notion was not lost on Chargers coach Norv Turner.

"The division is going to be different and it's going to be important for us to really get a handle on it," he said.  "We've got a lot of work to do to stay on top of what they're doing and preparing for our six division games."

With the potential for an $850 payout on every $100 bet to win the 2010 Super Bowl, the San Diego Chargers have value.   On paper this team can beat the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers.  But the bad taste from an 8-8 finish last season in what certainly was the worst division of the league still lingers.

Some of last year's missing pieces (Tomlinson performing up to 100 percent and Merriman's return) should help....but will it be enough to topple the Steelers and Patriots?  There are also the Colts, Baltimore and Titans to worry about of course.

The Chargers, perhaps more so than the Steelers and Patriots, have the best shot of gaining home field advantage come the post season thanks to their weak division.  New England will have to work twice as hard for it while the Steelers have  Baltimore to contend with.
