The History of Roulette

Roulette just happens to be one of the most iconic games in the realm of gambling. Not only is it one of the oldest and most traditional games found in a casino its one that is still to this day enjoyed by millions of players around the world in one form or another.

The game itself came about purely by accident and the creation of the roulette wheel can be credited to French inventor, physicist and mathematician Blaise Pascal. In the 17th century Pascal was working on a perpetual motion machine, a machine that would continually spin or rotate indefinitely without being connected to any type of energy source.

Eventually his research came to nothing and it was nearly a century later when the concept was picked up and turned into the game of roulette that we are now familiar with.

There are many theories as to how the game was devised and there are numerous games from across Europe that roulette is believed to have been combined from.

However it wasn’t until the year 1843 when French brothers François and Louis Blanc created a wheel which included the single “0” pocket now found on all modern day European roulette wheels.

This wheel was built especially for King Charles III of Monaco and it was in King Charles’ very own casino where roulette began to attract players and provide him with a steady income and it very quickly became an iconic symbol associated with the principality of Monaco.

Following the creation of the game the Blanc brothers had realised it would offer casinos a house edge meaning that many casino-based establishments should be interested in adopting this new and exciting game.

However after their attempts to sell the game across Germany, where gambling soon after became illegal, they found themselves in financial difficulty.

It was obvious the game had potential and eventually it found its way across the Atlantic into America where the game underwent further developments.

The Americans always keen on placing their own stamp on a game had built a new wheel with an extra numbers pocket, this time a double “0” slot, which once more increased the house edge to appeal to casinos looking to introduce the game.

Both of these two roulette wheel designs are still as popular today as they have always been with European and American roulette games providing plenty of entertainment for casino patrons around the world.

European roulette is the more popular choice for many payers due to its obvious lower house edge and higher chance of winning that its American counterpart however both games are usually available in most casinos.

Since the turn of the century technological advances have meant that we can now enjoy quality gaming on various mobile-based devices such as tablets and smartphones.

This has meant that playing roulette online has become even more convenient allowing players to enjoy the classic game on the go whenever and from wherever they may be.
