As of 2015, betting the Preakness Stakes online from the great state of Texas was only available courtesy of long established international websites such as BetDSI.com, which has been in business since 1997.

It’s not a bad thing, especially when one considers that BetDSI.com was offering up to $2500 in free bonus money for eligible new betting accounts.

US-based TwinSpires.com and the other handful of US licensed horse betting sites suspended taking bets from Texans last September.  This has been an on-and-off process throughout the years as the Lone Star State policy fluctuates erratically.

"As a result of an adverse court ruling in Texas, TwinSpires.com is suspending wagering activity from Texas residents effective Wednesday, Sept. 25," a statement from a Churchill Downs Inc. and TwinSpires.com said. "We will file an appeal and are optimistic that our legal arguments will prevail."

The one great thing about sites like BetDSI.com is that they do not require a social security number (unlike the US-based sites).  They also take bets from those 18 or over (compared to 21 or over for the US-based sites).

Other states prohibiting US-based horse betting businesses from taking bets online include: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, Canada

BetDSI.com.com does take wagers from those living in these states.
