You should definitely go back and check out the numbers for the first Avengers movie, which was released on May 4th, 2012, and you could say it was a bit of a success. In North America, The Avengers grossed over $207 million alone and set a slew of records, most of which have been broken by other movies such as The Dark Knight and the final Harry Potter movie, but those records are defintiely in play again for Age Of Ultron. Worldwide, the first movie has grossed a ridiculous $1.5 billion three years later.
However, you have to consider what Marvel has done since the first movie was released. Now they have shows such as Agents Of Shield and Agent Carter on a network like ABC, and much like the first Avengers, people who are not “comic nerds” are even getting in on the action, and the first movie had household names like Downey Jr. (whose turn as Iron Man might have been the biggest thing for Marvel) and Johansson, who is one of the most popular female actresses on the planet. Marvel is attracting casual fans who don't really care about the actual plot, just as long as it moves the story forward and that is why a lot of these box-office records are in trouble on May 1st.
Combine that with all of the marketing and promotion that Marvel and Walt Disney Studios have put into Age of Ultron (it seems like we have been watching trailers for the movie for at least a year now, when it has been about six months), and the stars themselves have been working hard to push the product, and it would be more of a surprise if Age Of Ultron failed to top the first.
