VictoryLand Casino Trial Concludes After Four Days of Testimony

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Associated Press) -- A four-day trial over the legality of gambling machines seized from the VictoryLand casino has ended, but it will be a few weeks before the judge rules.

Attorneys for the closed Macon County casino and the state attorney general's office wrapped up their cases in a Montgomery courtroom Friday afternoon. Circuit Judge William Shashy gave lawyers four weeks to file more legal arguments after the transcript of the case is completed. Then he will rule.

VictoryLand attorney Joe Espy said a constitutional amendment approved by Macon County voters in 2003 allows all types of bingo, including electronic bingo games. Assistant Attorney General Sonny Reagan says the games violate the criteria for bingo that the Alabama Supreme Court set in a casino case from Lowndes County.
