California Chrome at Better Than Even Odds to Win Belmont Stakes an Absolute Steal

Everybody and their mother is believing we will have a Triple Crown winner this year – the first in over 35 years – with California Chrome having dominated both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.  With that said, Bookmaker, the oldest established North American-based online sportsbook, is now offering California Chrome at +115 odds (for a payout of $115 on every $100 bet or $11.50 on every $10 bet).  Common sense dictates one should lock in these odds immediately since they are almost guaranteed to get reduced further, assuming of course this is the horse you plan on backing.  30% of those betting into Bookmaker are.

Odds initially opened closer to 1/2. 

California Chrome pulled up to Barn 26 at Belmont Park at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday and will enjoy another 18 days of rest before the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Immediately following Chrome’s Preakness Stakes win there were lingering doubts as to whether he would actually run the Belmont Stakes.  His owners wanted the horse to be fitted with nasal strips, something the New York Racing Association had forbidden for thoroughbreds in recent years.  By Monday, the NYRA had approved use of the nasal strips.

Trainer Art Sherman’s son, Alan, played down the issue.

"It wasn't a big issue," Alan Sherman said. "They opened it up for everyone, not just for us."

Bookmaker was offering odds on whether California Chrome would be scratched from the race at 10/1.
