Libertarian Blasts Attempt to Revive Online Gambling Prohibition

The Competitive Enterprise Institute, a powerful Libertarian organization that this week sued the White House science and technology office, has attacked efforts to revive online gambling prohibition.

House and Senate bills by Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., seek to completely abolish all forms of Internet gambling, with the notable exception of horse racing and fantasy sports, at both the federal and state level, thus strengthening legislation passed as an amendment to the Port Security Act of 2006.

“Not only does this heavy-handed proposal trample on state and individuals’ rights to make such decisions, it will utterly fail to stop Americans from gambling online,” pushing them into foreign-owned sites instead, the report says.

Nobody can say the CEI doesn’t have backbone.

The organization’s lawsuit against the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) alleges it has refused to produce public information in response to an October 2013 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Specifically, CEI sought work-related correspondence to or from White House ‘science czar’, OSTP Director John Holdren, using the email server of a green pressure.
