The second race in horse racing’s Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes.  The 139th running of the Preakness Stakes will be on Saturday, May 17th, 2014.  Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome will be the favorite as he looks to win the second race in the Triple Crown.
The Preakness States is run at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.  The race dates back to 1873 and is currently run at the distance of a mile and 3/16th.  The Preakness is run two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes.
The Preakness Stakes has field that is much smaller than the Kentucky Derby field.  The Kentucky Derby can have as many as 20 horses but the Preakness is limited to 14.  With the smaller field, the horse racing odds are also smaller. The race is simply a race for the favorites.  The first or second choice in the betting wins this race more than half the time.

Barring an injury, California Chrome will most certainly be running in this year’s Preakness Stakes and will be the favorite.

Other Preakness Stakes possible early contenders included the following:

Social Inclusion

The horse is trained by Bob Baffert and he could be a live longshot. He was considered a Kentucky Derby contender until a poor effort in the Arkansas Derby.

Pablo Del Monte

This horse could have been started in the Kentucky Derby but his connections didn’t want to start the horse from the number 20 post so they held him out.

Ride on Curlin

This horse finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby but he is capable of improving in the Preakness.

Strong Mandate

This horse is trained by D. Wayne Lukas so he will get some action. The horse continually finds trouble but when he is good, he is very good.

Other horses in the mix could be Kid Cruz, Commanding Curve and Dynamic Impact.
