At 8-1 odds, Fort Larned certainly has terrific value as last year’s Classic winner.

At Churchill Downs, Fort Larned worked five furlongs in 1:01.80 in his final prep for the Classic on earlier in the week.

“Everything’s good. It was a nice work,” Ian Wilkes, who trains Fort Larned, said by telephone. “He came back happy. He wanted to do more.”

He was later flown out to California where he will run in the Breeders Cup Classic Saturday at Santa Anita.

The five-year-old has struggled somewhat in the early part of 2013, underperforming at both the Gulfstream Park Handicap and Oaklawn Handicap but would later go on to win the Stephen Foster Handicap by six lengths.   As if that were not impressive enough, the winning time of 1:47.45 was the second fastest in the history of the race.

How We Follow Horse Racing Has Completely Changed

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
