The Travers Stakes is raced at Saratoga on 1¼ miles (10 Furlongs) of dirt.  It features a $1 million purse.  The race is limited to three-year-olds, Colts and geldings carrying 126 pounds (57 kg) and fillies carrying 123 pounds (56 kg).  This is Saratoga’s biggest race.

Verrazano finished 14th at Churchill behind triumphant Orb (listed at just shy of 2/1 to win the Travers Stakes) but bounced back to win Monmouth Park's Pegasus by 9-1/4 lengths and the $1 million Haskell by 9-3/4.  There was some speculation that Churchill Down’s sloppy tracks led to Verrazano’s disastrous finish.

"After the Derby, we thought we had the top 3-year-old," Bryan Sullivan, a managing partner in the Let's Go Stable syndicate that co-owns Verrazano, said after Wednesday's Travers post-position draw. "Things just didn't work out for us on Derby Day. It's a tough race to win. We chose a path that was Pegagus, Haskell and hopefully to here. Everything has gone according to plan.

"The horse is doing tremendous. And yeah, there's a lot riding on this race. For my money, whoever wins this race has a big case to say, 'Hey, I'm the 3-year-old champ.' Obviously we have a long ways to go, but if you have any one of these three horses, with their credentials, and they win this race, it's going to be tough to not have them be at least the top choice or second choice for 3-year-old of the year."
