18 More Arrests Made in Connection With Platinum Sportsbook Probe

The RCMP arrested another 18 individuals in connection with an ongoing case tied to Web-based sports betting operator Platinum Sportsbook (or Platinum SB).

Police had previously made a series of arrests of those connected to the alleged organized crime-run operation during a lavish Super Bowl party in Markham, Ontario last month.  Six men were arrested.  Two of the six men were re-arrested Tuesday morning.

Canadian authorities seized the PlatinumSB.com website last month and posted the following message both in English and French:

The web site you are trying to access has been restrained by court order granted to the Attorney General of Ontario with the assistance of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU).

During Tuesday’s press conference, RCMP Acting Supt. Keith Finn said the arrests comprised a “significant phase of the investigation.”

“We believe that having these individuals under arrest and out of circulation means that the effects that the illegal gambling enterprise and the extortion that goes along with that will be significantly disrupted,” Finn said.

Names of those arrested were anticipated to be released on Wednesday.
