Jim Dandy 2012 Betting Odds – Saratoga: Alpha, Liaison, Neck n Neck Contenders to Watch

The Jim Dandy will determine which horse continues to the $1 million Travers Stakes Aug. 25.

Alpha, the favorite of the 3-year-olds taking part, drew the inside for Saturday’s race and would pay out $15 for every $10 bet with a win.  He is one of the least relished favorites in a horse race we have seen in some time.

Alpha certainly fits the mold of a horse whose promise has never been fully realized, writes Bob Ehalt of ESPN.com. 

"With I'll Have Another, Bodemeister and Union Rags not being around, that leaves the door open for one of them," says Teeth of the Dog trainer Michael Matz.  His horse was listed with 4/1 odds. 

Neck ‘n Neck and Liaison were pretty much co-favorites with Alpha and either one could have shorter odds just prior to race time.  Both were listed between 2/1 and 3/1. 

Byron King of the Daily Racing Form noted that Liaison’s improving form points to continued development, as does his recent training. On Monday at Del Mar, he breezed six furlongs in 1:12.40.

King also pointed out that, of the seven opponents facing Liaison, only Atigun hit the board in a Triple Crown race this year, finishing third in the Belmont.
