TRENTON, N.J. — Internet gambling in New Jersey has moved a step closer to reality.

An Assembly panel approved the proposal Monday. The bill now needs to be voted on by the full Assembly and Senate, but those votes have not yet been scheduled.

As it currently stands, the bill would allow Atlantic City casinos to accept Internet bets from gamblers in other states, as long as such activity is consistent with federal law.

New Jersey is moving rapidly to increase the number and types of legalized gambling it offers.

In addition to online gambling, the state also plans to move forward with sports betting, even though Gov. Chris Christie has said he expects federal authorities to sue to try to block it because federal law does not allow it in New Jersey.
