Ron Paul Still Gets Little Love From Media, Prediction Market

Republican Presidential candidate, Texas Congressman Ron Paul, gets no love.  The media has all but ignored him despite the fact he received about 1 percent less votes at this past weekend’s Iowa Straw Poll than the winner Michele Bachmann.

Likewise, the prediction market at intrade.com has Paul moving up barely 2 percentage points to just under 4 percent.

Ron Paul has always been widely regarded among the online gambling sector for his support of personal freedoms and co-sponsorship of a bill to legalize the activity in the United States.

Some are touting him as the “Invisible Man”.  Maybe it’s our bias but the gap between Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann was so small there probably would have been a runoff if that were an actual election.

NPR said it best:

Famous and not so famous critics have pointed out in the past day that journalists for the most part have ignored Paul even when he succeeds at a level other Republican presidential candidates haven't.

As far as many political reporters have been concerned, the congressman might as well be wearing one of those Harry Potter invisibility cloaks. He's there but we apparently can't see him.

For instance, despite putting in a strong second place showing in the Ames Straw Poll in Iowa on Saturday and polling consistently well in polls of voters nationally or in caucus and primary states, the 74-year old Libertarian was mostly ignored.

Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor, got much more attention for dropping out of the race than Paul did for nearly winning.

Supporters of Ron Paul might not want to get too upset.  After all, the Congressman being invisible may keep him out of the cross fire between Bachmann, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney…not necessarily a bad thing if you ask us.
