How They Got Here
Number 3 ranked Illinois is finally back in the Sweet 16 after nearly a 20 year wait. The Fighting Illini routed Duquesne 89-63.
“This program is elite,” Illinois coach Brad Underwood said. “To not be there in 18, 19 years, that's mind-numbing. It feels good to be advancing with this group. This is one of my favorite teams to coach. On to Boston.”
The Fighting Illini have failed to get past the first weekend of the tournament in their last eight tries.
“Part of me wants to get real excited,” Illini forward Coleman Hawkins said. “And a part of me wants to keep the feeling of the job's not done yet. I’m happy making the Sweet 16. I’m aware of the history because it gets thrown in our face. The goal now is to become national champions because that’s why we’re here.”
Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 30 points, Marcus Domask added 22 and Illinois made fast work of its 11th-seeded opponent from the Atlantic 10.
Shannon has been listing at around 24.5 with the total scoring props.
Number 2 seed Iowa State's road to the Sweet 16 wasn't quite as easy as they tied with Washington State 27-27 at Halftime. They would go on to win 67-56.
“I think our guys are a very together and poised group,” Cyclones head coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “We know we’re going to have adversity, and credit Washington State for doing a great job putting us on our heels. But credit to our guys for not panicking, not getting too low or emotional, and staying the course, waiting for it to come back around to us.”
Iowa State has not played Illinois since the Maui Invitational in 2018.
