With Algorithms out, Union Rags easily won Sunday’s Fountain of Youth and solidified himself as the favorite to win the 2012 Kentucky Derby. “I’m just so happy right now,” said Union Rags trainer Michael Matz. “It’s just great to be back.”
Starlight Racing's undefeated Algorithms, the early favorite, suffered a splint in his right front leg.
Jack Wolf of Starlight Racing and trainer Todd Pletcher both issued statements on the situation.
"It's disappointing," Wolf said. "Unfortunately, these things are part of the game, and we deal with them."
"The colt has been training beautifully," Pletcher said. "It's an unfortunate situation. We'll monitor him closely and see how he responds."
