American Pharoah had been the favorite in this race but was sidelined due to a bruise in his left front foot.

The horses with the next shortest odds were Daredevil and Carpe Diem.

The Breeders' Futurity is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" event where Carpe Diem was victorious by a 6 1/4-length victory.

"He was a little difficult in the gate. I tried to settle him behind horses and teach him a little bit," Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez said. "He got a little aggressive and I didn't want to fight him so I just let him be what he wanted to be in the backstretch and then he settled very well. Once he got head and head with that other horse, he got on the bit again. He was going good the whole way."
