The Haskell Invitational is an American Grade I race for Thoroughbred horses held at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.  In 1981, the race was made an invitation-only stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles.

"You know we're in a no-lose position," Jerry Crawford, managing partner of Donegal Racing, said of his horse Dullahan. "If he wins, I'm a genius and if he loses, no one will notice.

"The fact is we've won two Grade I's and only I'll Have Another has won three. And the track surface (at Monmouth) is more like Churchill than it was at Belmont when it got really loose."

Dullahan and Gemologist lucked out after both Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags and Bodemeister were scrapped from the $1 million Haskell.
