The Arkansas Derby ends this year’s Kentucky Derby prep season.

The Arkansas Derby is one of the most critical races leading up to the Kentucky Derby.

It is open to three-year-old horses and run on dirt at 1⅛ miles (9 furlongs).  The purse for this race is a sweet $1 million.

American Pharoah is a pretty significant 1-2 favorite here.  He has won his last three races by a combined 141/4 lengths.

“He’s not going to be afraid of anything,” said jockey Victor Espinoza, who won last year’s Kentucky Derby on California Chrome and in 2002 on War Emblem. Espinoza has ridden American Pharaoh in all three of his wins.  “He can take anything. ... The last couple of times, he felt like he was going in slow-motion. I feel like he’s not going fast enough. But when I cross the wire and look back, everybody is far, far behind me. That’s what I like about him. You don’t feel his speed, how fast he’s going. But he’s running an unbelievable race.”

The Truth Or Else - 15/1
Mr. Z - 10/1
Bridget's Big Luvy 20-1
Madefromlucky 6-1
Bold Conquest 20-1
American Pharaoh 1-2
Far Right 9-2

How We Follow Horse Racing Has Completely Changed

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
