Reports began surfacing last Wednesday that rapper and former member of the Atlanta-based hip hop group Migos, Offset, was once sued by a Detroit casino for failure to pay a $100,000 debt.
TMZ.com first broke this news on Thursday.
Police are looking at mounting gambling debts owed to others as a possible motive for the Monday shooting of Offset outside a Hollywood, Florida casino.
A rapper known as Lil Tjay, Tione Jayden Merritt, was arrested for an altercation that occurred just prior to the shooting at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino.
The Seminole Police Department in Florida said Lil Tjay was charged with disorderly conduct and operating a vehicle without a valid license at a location nearby the famed casino. Lil Tjay did not have a weapon and was not charged in the shooting, according to his attorney.
His attorney responded to reports he had been arrested in connection with the actual shooting.
“We are issuing this release in regards to false rumors that Lil Tjay was involved in a shooting which occurred at the Valet Area of the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood which resulting in non-life threatening injuries to Offset, formerly a member of Migos.
"Lil Tjay has not been shot, nor has Lil Tjay been charged with any shooting. Any reporting to the contrary is false. We encourage people to consult trusted news sources, and to verify the accuracy of any reporting, before reflexively sharing or repeating baseless rumors.”
Police now believe an associate of Lil Tjay may be behind the shooting.
Offset is in stable condition at a nearby hospital. He reportedly has since accused Lil Tjay of being involved in the shooting.
From his hospital bed, Offset exchanged barbs with Lil Tjay, calling him a "rat" and the latter called Offset the same.
“U ain’t buss nun,” Set taunted Tjay in the comment section of a The Shade Room Teens post about Lil Tjay’s comment.
Lil Tjay offered his account of the incident:
“The last thing I seen was Offset looking at me like this, ‘Yo, that n—a shot me. That n—a shot me.’ La la la. N—a is a rat. N—a is a rat. I don’t do no damn fighting,” he said. “I didn’t do no damn fighting. Did I shoot Offset? That s–t is crazy.”
Tjay continued: “I’ll slap the s–t out of Offset. He would never play with me like that in his life.”
Offset rose to fame as part of Migos alongside Quavo and the late Takeoff, helping shape modern hip-hop with hits like “Versace,” “Bad and Boujee,” and “Walk It Talk It.” This incident comes years after Takeoff was fatally shot in 2022.
