Jamal Chemin, 42, was hired by a criminal organization to put a tracking device on Giorgio Barresi's BMW in 2020 and would later be charged with the first-degree murder of Barresi, a 42-year-old married father of three who was shot multiple times on his Stoney Creek driveway in 2020.

Det. Sgt. Jim Callender said at the time that Barresi did not know either of the men and called his murder "a financially motivated crime."

"Our family is forever broken. A piece of our hearts is gone," Barresi's wife, Sonia Horta-Barres, said in a video made by Hamilton police in 2020.

A Mafia expert previously told CBC Hamilton Barresi had ties to the Musitano crime family.

The Musitano crime family is a 'Ndrangheta organized crime family based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, as well as Platì in Southern Italy and Buccinasco and Bareggio in Northern Italy.  They are known to dabble in gambling, including sports betting.

Chemin plead guilty last month to knowingly participating in activities of a criminal organization and two counts of possessing prohibited loaded firearms and received a reduced 8-year sentence.

Another individual, Sorossa Moude, 28, was also charged with Barresi's murder and his case remains before the courts.
