Fans Risk Losing Their Investment With Emmanuel Clase Under Probe for Allegedly Violating League Gambling Policy

Clase is the star attraction at Finlete, which is a crowdfunded investment platform that allows sports fans invest directly in athletes’ careers.  They are essentially buying shares tied to a player's future earnings.

And with Clase, 27, now having his locker cleaned out, there is a good chance the three-time All-Star, could be declared permanently ineligible if found to have violated Major League Baseball's gambling policy.

Finlete noted that Clase’s current contract extends through 2026 and guarantees him at least $13.3 million, if the Guardians decline a 2027 buyout. The Guardians hold an option for $10 million in 2027 and another for $10 million in 2028. Clase would be eligible for free agency if the Guardians decline either option, or after the option years have been exercised.

The violation in question appears to be related to player prop bets.

Gambling Mogul Charged in Connection With Series of Brutal Murders

MANILA, Philippines — Tycoon Atong Ang has been accused in a series of brutal murders.

The Philippine Department of Justice has charged the gambling tycoon with murder and serious illegal detention in connection with the disappearance and alleged killings of cockfighting enthusiasts (known as “sabungeros”) between April 2021 and January 2022.  108 individuals remain missing though he is currently suspected of being the mastermind behind the abduction and summary execution of 34 sabungeros, whose bodies were allegedly disposed of in Taal Lake.

Ang said he welcomed the formal filing of cases against him over his alleged involvement in the “missing sabungeros” case, saying he is ready to address the allegations in the appropriate legal forum.

In a statement on Sunday, August 3, Ang, through his lawyer Gabriel Villareal, maintained his innocence and cautioned against the testimony of self-proclaimed whistleblower Julie Patidongan, describing it as “flawed, self-serving, and unsubstantiated.”

“It is from that strategic vantage point that Patidongan was able to upscale from a robbery syndicate to operating his criminal network of illegal gambling, kidnapping, extortion and intimidation, using, without the knowledge of his superiors, the resources and network available to him,” Ang, through Villareal’s statement, read.

“Finding himself under threat of exposure when he was himself tagged in the disappearance of a cockfighting competitor in Manila sometime late last year, he would now point to his superiors as masterminds in an incredulous story he has concocted to avoid the consequences of his criminal designs,” he added.

The powerful figure said to have influence up to the Philippine Supreme Court.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine Blames Prop Bets After MLB Gambling Scandal

On Thursday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine called on the state’s Casino Control Commission to remove prop bets from the list of legal wagers in Ohio.

Previously, regulators here had only focused on prop bets as they pertained to college sports.

DeWine has taken matters further by targeting pro sports leagues.

This comes in the wake of a scandal involving the Cleveland Guardians. Two of its players are under investigation for violating Major League Baseball's gambling policy.

First game Luis Ortiz.

The paid leave for Ortiz, which ended at the conclusion of the All-Star break, was negotiated between the league and the MLB Players Association. That leave was extended and his locker cleared out in recent days.

Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase has also been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of a Major League Baseball investigation into sports betting.

Clase, a three-time All-Star, becomes the second Guardians pitcher to be placed on leave in connection with a sports gambling probe.

“I’m not happy. This stinks,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said upon learning of the probe. “It’s a different part of our game now because it’s legal. Two of our guys are being investigated — and it hurts. It’s an unfortunate situation.”

It was not made clear if a decision had been reached involving the two players or if it is just potential locker changes in the clubhouse following the conclusion of the MLB trade deadline on July 31.

DeWine also plans to ask major league sports commissioners and players unions to get behind his effort to ban prop bets in pro sports.

"The harm to athletes and the integrity of the game is clear, and the benefits are not worth the harm," DeWine said in a July 31 statement. "The prop betting experiment in this country has failed badly."
