Top Trending: DraftKings Claims it Acted Properly in Voiding Iowa Man’s $14.2 Million Payout

The online sports betting company DraftKings claims it was in the right in refusing to pay an Iowa man $14.2 million.  We have more top gambling headlines by scrolling below.

Nicholas Bavas, a resident of Dallas County, is suing DraftKings Inc., headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, along with its subsidiary Crown IA Gaming, which is licensed by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to conduct sports wagering within the state.

From the Des Moines Register: 

Bavas claims DraftKings unfairly voided the bets he placed on the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament as rain threatened to cut short play after 54 holes. Aware there was a good chance of the final round being canceled, and with DraftKings still accepting bets on the tournament’s outcome, bettors around the country, Bavas included, put their money on all of the competitors who were then in the lead.

DraftKings has denied any wrongdoing in the matter and recently asserted 19 separate affirmative defenses in the case, including a claim that Bavas “knowingly accepted the risk that circumstances may arise related to the odds associated with any wager.”

The company argues that this risk was disclosed in the “house rules” to which Bavas agreed, including rules that expressly warn that errors may occur and DraftKings has the right to void wagers due to any such errors.

Gamblers this week began highlighting what appear to be updated rules on the DraftKings website pertaining to placing bets after critical information about a team's athlete availability is released but prior to the odds being updated on the DraftKings platform.  Gambling911.com cannot independently verify how long the particular policy has been in place. 

Attorneys for Bavas argue DraftKings applies a “dizzying array of interlocking sets of rules that may or may not govern each bet depending on the type of wager placed, the specific event, and the particular sport … However, when DraftKings makes an error or accepts a bet it should not have, or when unforeseen events occur that require an unanticipated large pay out by DraftKings, then it seems different rules apply.”

A trial in the case is scheduled for Sept. 28, 2026.

• Man Arrested Following Armed Robbery of Gambling Establishment - Police are reporting an early-morning robbery took place today at a retail lottery company. Lieutenant M.G. Bragg with the Beckley Police Department reports that officers responded to a robbery in progress call at Opportunity Knocks at 423 Ragland Road around 3:30am this morning.  The caller stated a man entered the business, brandished a firearm and then demanded money from an employee. The man then fled with an undisclosed amount of money. Officers then canvases the area and analyzed surveillance footage that helped police identify the suspect’s vehicle. • Leading Owner Kenny Alexander Among 11 Charged Over Gambling Services in Turkey - Kenny Alexander, former head of the parent company of Ladbrokes, is among 11 people who have been charged as part of an investigation into the provision of gambling services in Turkey.  Alexander, 56, of Perth in Scotland, the former chief executive of the then GVC Holdings, now known as Entain, was charged with conspiracy to defraud and conspiracy to bribe between 2011 and 2018, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

• North Carolina Man Sues Online Gaming Platforms for Exploiting Gambling Addiction - A North Carolina man has filed a multi-count lawsuit in the Federal U.S. District Court, Sacramento division, against ARB Gaming LLC (DBA Modo Casino), B2Services OU (DBA McLuck Social Casino), and Affirm, Inc., alleging predatory practices that exploited his gambling addiction and caused severe financial and emotional harm. The Law Office of Reshma Kamath has initiated and filed the lawsuit. Plaintiff Matthew Joyce, who suffers from a recognized gambling disorder as well as bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety, claims that the defendants engaged in unlawful, unfair, and fraudulent business practices through online gaming platforms marketed as sweepstakes but functioning as illegal lotteries. The complaint asserts violations of the Unruh Civil Rights Act, breach of contract, negligent misrepresentation, fraud, unjust enrichment, and violations of the California Financial Lenders Law. According to the complaint, Joyce's vulnerability was deliberately targeted. He was elevated to "Black Diamond" status, which granted him preferential treatment such as personal hosts, substantial free credits, and incentives not offered to ordinary players. According to the lawsuit, the timing of the plaintiff's wins and losses followed a specific pattern orchestrated by the defendants to maximize addiction and financial harm. Specifically, larger wins were strategically timed to occur at the beginning of weekends, which prevented the plaintiff from withdrawing funds during non-business days. Meanwhile, the defendants' redemption policies required one-to-two business days for processing, deliberately allowing cancellation options they knew the plaintiff would utilize.
