Reports of an outage at one of the United States largest regulated sportsbooks began coming in Thursday evening.  The FanDuel outage was attributed to a "thermal event" (overheating) caused by a cooling failure at an Amazon Web Services (AWS) at their Northern Virginia data center.

The company acknowledged the outage that seemed to be impacting customers across their entire platform.  Confirmed outages were reported in Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Missouri, suggesting this is not just a regional issue.

"Our team is aware and investigating the current technical difficulties prohibiting users from accessing our platform. We will follow up as soon as we have an update."

The outage occurred as two NBA Playoff games were getting underway.

During the 9 pm EDT hour, many customers were demanding refunds and/or bonuses.

"Your platform has been completely DOWN for over an hour during tonight's playoff games, one of the highest-traffic betting events of the year. This is a catastrophic failure. Live bets have been inaccessible, leaving users unable to manage active wagers in real time. This is not a minor inconvenience. This is a direct financial harm to your customers. I expect a formal response, a full explanation of the outage, and accountability for the losses incurred by affected users. Silence is not acceptable."
