LOS ANGELES (Gambling911.com) - Free-to-play online poker rooms are available from the great state of California. This is an excellent way to hone one's skills before diving in to real money play, either online or at one of California's vast number of poker venues.
ACR Poker's Free-to-Play Online Poker
Daily Freerolls: ACR Poker hosts multiple $50 guaranteed freeroll tournaments every single day. These run every few hours and cover different game variations like No-Limit Texas Hold'em, Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO), and PLO8.
No Deposit Required: You can register a new account with just an email, download the software, and join these open freerolls without funding your account.
Best of all, you can actually walk away with cold hard cash.
Beyond the standard public schedule, private freerolls with prize pools that are typically around $500 are regularly hosted by ACR poker streamers. Passwords for these exclusive events are usually shared directly on Twitch streams or community channels shortly before registration is set to start.
ACR Poker's Position on Legality of Real Money Play in California
ACR Poker also offers poker with players across the world for real money. To be clear, Real money online poker in California is not regulated by the state, at least not yet. ACR Poker is licensed internationally.
Player Workarounds & Offshore Poker Sites
"Thousands of Californians play poker online via offshore poker platforms that accept California residents. This operates within a legal grey area. The state does not actively prosecute individual players, but it also does not regulate these sites. Choosing an established platform with a long track record is key for reliability."
Safety & Risks of Offshore Sites
"Offshore sites are not overseen by California regulators. However, well-known platforms like ACR have reputations for consistent game availability, fair play, and timely payouts. Players should prioritise reputable operators, use strong passwords and available security features, and understand that state protections do not apply."
Deposits and Withdrawals
"Sites like ACR support multiple banking options, including credit cards, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, and selected e-wallets. Cryptocurrency is popular because it can offer faster processing and smoother withdrawals. Always follow site instructions carefully and remember to report gambling winnings in line with tax requirements."
Sweepstakes Poker Rooms Are Also Free...But Limited Options in California
California banned traditional dual-currency sweepstakes casinos effective January 1, 2026. However, certain free-to-play social casinos can still operate legally.
Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 831 in October 2025, prohibiting online sweepstakes casinos that use virtual currencies redeemable for cash or prizes.
Casino model Legal status
- Dual-currency sweepstakes casinos with cash redemption Prohibited
- Free-play social casinos with no cash prizes Permitted
- Gold Coins-only casino games Generally permitted
- Traditional promotional sweepstakes Permitted, subject to existing laws
- Real-money online casino gambling Not authorized
Gold Coins-only casino games are essentially free-to-play online casinos where players gamble with virtual currency that cannot be redeemed for real money.
There is one small problem.
These sweepstakes poker rooms require users to purchase chips once their bonus chips runs out. And unlike the more common dual-currency sweepstakes casinos that have propagated across the U.S., these sweepstakes free-to-play online poker rooms do not offer any type of payout options.
Here is how the business model works:
Players receive free Gold Coins when registering or through daily bonuses.
They play casino games such as slots, blackjack, roulette and sometimes poker.
They can win additional Gold Coins, but those coins have no cash value.
They may purchase more Gold Coins to continue playing.
They cannot cash out winnings, exchange Gold Coins for gift cards or redeem them for other prizes of monetary value.
So what do players get out of it?
Entertainment
We get that part, but there is a cost to this type of entertainment in the form of having to purchase the gold coins.
Here's what motivates people to play Gold Coins-only casino games:
1. The thrill of winning: Players can hit a virtual jackpot worth millions of Gold Coins, even though they can't cash it out.
2. Competition: Some games offer leaderboards, rankings, achievements and challenges.
3. Entertainment: Players enjoy slots, blackjack, roulette and poker without risking money on individual wagers.
4. Social interaction: Poker players, in particular, may enjoy competing against other people.
5. Progression: Players can accumulate virtual fortunes, unlock features and advance through VIP levels.
There is a surprisingly substantial market for social casinos where players spend real money purchasing virtual chips despite having absolutely no opportunity to cash out.
And what's particularly interesting is that this business model existed long before the recent sweepstakes casino boom (think the wildly successful Zynga Poker).
Players aren't necessarily looking to make money. Many are willing to pay for the entertainment experience, just as they would for mobile games.
The industry is quite staggering.

ClubWPT Converts to a Training Model
What changes came to the ClubWPT Gold platform for California users?
ClubWPT explained its workaround for California residents earlier this year.
ClubWPT Gold is making necessary changes to comply with CA AB 831 and continue serving our California players.
Starting on January 1, 2026, we’re introducing California Game Days. When you’re playing from California, you can win redeemable Chips in our ring games and tournaments for up to a maximum of nine calendar days per month.
Chips won outside of the nine-day window are still credited to your account as unredeemable Chips.
You can play unredeemable Chips into redeemable Chips during the nine-day window in any future month.
All of our other training features will remain the same and be available 24/7. Players can still access the Hand Analysis tool as often as they want each day.
These changes take effect on January 1, 2026, and apply only to players physically located in California when playing on ClubWPT Gold.
Which ClubWPT Gold features will be available outside of California Game Days?
California players can still play, learn, and train 24/7. The only change is the opportunity to play for redeemable Chips, which will be available only during California Game Days.
Keep in mind, you can still play unredeemable Chips won outside of the California Game Days window into redeemable Chips in any future month!
What days are California Game Days?
For players physically located in California, California Game Days apply to the first nine calendar days you play at least one hand in ring games and/or tournaments at ClubWPT Gold.
For example, if you play at least one hand on January 4, January 9, and January 15, that counts as three calendar days.
If I don’t participate in California Game Days up to the maximum of nine days in a particular month, will my unused days roll over so I can participate in more than nine days of California Game Days the next month?
No. Unused California Game Days don’t roll over into the next month.
Can I still play and win Chips outside of California Game Days?
Yes! California ClubWPT Gold players can still win Chips outside of California Game Days, but those Chips will be accumulated as unredeemable Chips (but can be played through into redeemable Chips during the nine-day window in any future month).
How can I redeem Chips won outside of California Game Days?
Chips won outside of California Game Days (unredeemable Chips) can be played into redeemable Chips during any future California Game Days window.
For example:
Let’s say you win 1,000 Chips on your 10th calendar day playing at ClubWPT Gold in a given month. Those Chips will be credited to your account as unredeemable Chips.
The following month begins, and you play in a ring game or tournament. Your unredeemable Chips will automatically be used before any redeemable Chips.
Any unredeemable Chips from previous months become redeemable Chips as soon as you play them, throughout the California Game Days window of the current month.
If I play fewer than nine days in a month, how does this impact me? If you play fewer than nine days from California in a month, your ClubWPT Gold experience remains unchanged!
When will these changes to ClubWPT Gold take effect?
For all California players, these changes go into effect on January 1, 2026.
How will I know which of my Chips are redeemable?
Check your Wallet for your updated balances of redeemable and unredeemable Chips.
Can I redeem the Chips I have already won prior to January 1, 2026?
Yes! Any Chips you’ve won before January 1 are eligible for redemption as per usual.
Why is ClubWPT Gold making these changes?
As you may be aware, California recently passed AB 831, a new law prohibiting specific online sweepstakes platforms that use a “dual-currency system of payment” to mimic or simulate gambling. The new law goes into effect on January 1, 2026.
ClubWPT Gold is a platform for poker education and training and does not feature a dual-currency system. ClubWPT Gold is committed to operating a legal platform that complies with the laws of every jurisdiction in which it is available.
ClubWPT Gold is taking additional steps to support the platform's primary training features while still allowing players to test their skills in games for redeemable Chips on a limited and occasional basis. These updates will provide a best-in-class poker training experience while maintaining a legally compliant platform for Users.
We’re committed to staying in California and look forward to continuing to provide a world-class poker platform for our players when they play from California.
If I don’t like the changes, how do I cancel my subscription? If you would like to cancel your subscription, you may do so in your player profile.
