The Alabama Team Everybody is Talking About: It's Not the Tide or Tigers

This time of year, football is like a religion in Sweet Home Alabama.

We have the Crimson Tide with their fan base extending well beyond Tuscaloosa.

There's the Auburn Tigers, whose fans are nearly as rabid.  The Tigers support reaches well beyond Auburn into cities nearly an hour away like Montgomery

Alas, there are studies to determine the percentage of fans for each team in various regions of the state.

And then there is the team everybody is talking about these last two weeks.

South Alabama!

One week after winning by 77 in a shortened game against Northwestern State because of a mercy rule, South Alabama dominated App State as a 7.5-point underdog Thursday night.

That team may not have kept up its winning ways thereafter but it is surely a great time for Alabama bookies and gamblers alike, especially in light of Alabama's big win over Georgia (followed by an equally discouraging loss to Vanderbilt the week after).

South Alabama Dominates App State

Gio Lopez threw for two touchdowns and ran in another as South Alabama dominated Appalachian State 48-14 on Thursday night.

The Jaguars (2-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) scored a pair of touchdowns in the first and second quarters to jump out to a 28-0 lead. Lopez found DJ Thomas-Jones for a 10-yard score to open the scoring before Fluff Bothwell ran one in from 22 yards out.

South Alabama ran for 322 yards and five touchdowns on 41 carries in the win.

The team is 2-2 on the season thus far following a sluggish start with losses to North Texas and Ohio in Weeks 0 and 1, respectively.  But teams do improve.  The big win against Northwestern State certainly raised eyebrows but beating a good App State team as an underdog is causing folks to take notice.

They'll take on LSU next week.   Expect the Jaguars to be a pretty hefty dog here.  And sportsbooks should see more action on this game (both sides) than what may have been anticipated coming into the 2024 season.
