The NL West has been about pitching the past few years and after inking P Matt Cain to a huge extension, San Francisco is out to show that their staff can’t be topped.

Pitchers: Tim Lincecum vs. Ian Kennedy

Two-time Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum gets the call on opening day in Arizona as the Giants and Diamondbacks meet for the first time this season. Arizona claimed the division last year as they thrived under Manager Kirk Gibson. Arizona used their own blend of stout pitching with timely hitting to taste the playoffs last year and need to build off that success. But the Giants are out to claim it back after winning it all in 2010. They were swept by Arizona in late September to all but eliminate San Fran from the playoffs and they likely would love some payback.

The Giants also get their young phenom C Buster Posey back this year and his offense will be needed. This team could not score when they needed too last season as their pitching can only take them so far. They have lost eight of their last ten to Arizona and need to turn that around this year.  Posey has some very good numbers in his young career vs. Kennedy (6-for-14) and if he can kick-start this offense in 2012, big things are in-store for the Giants.

Arizona surprised many with their play last year and the bad news for them is that they won’t be able to this season. More teams are going to consider them as a legit contender and play them tougher each and every night. A few of them do hit Lincecum well (Aaron Hill, Ryan Roberts, Paul Goldschmidt) but this one won’t be their night. Lincecum and the Giants need a good start to the year and this will be it.

Look for the Giants to win this one.
