Ariel Epstein, Sports Betting’s Prop Queen, Says She Was Kicked Out of Fantasy League in 7th Grade for "Being Too Good" - Ariel’s two best friends growing up were sports-crazed twins named Max and Jesse Cohen.  In the 7th grade the trio joined a fantasy sports league but Epstein just kept winning and got kicked out by the twins.

She went and started her own leagues online, some with friends, others with total strangers. She won there, too.

Input Magazine sat down for an exclusive interview with Epstein (AKA "The Prop Queen").

When she picks a prop, Epstein prognosticates whether a player will go over or under a specific betting line. Often, because lines move fluidly depending on betting action, she’ll make a pick and give listeners some context, instructing them to shy away from a wager if the total moves past a certain point (or if the books charge too much of a fee to bet it).

“I’m more about giving out information that backs up smart, educated bets than I am about telling people how much to bet,” she explained. “At the end of the day it’s their money, not mine.” Epstein says.

Colorado Audit Reveals Lax Background Checks, If Any, And Sports Betting Operators Questionable Tax Reporting - DENVER (AP) — Colorado regulators haven’t completed background checks for a majority of internet operators in the state’s nascent sports betting industry, possibly allowing operators with criminal backgrounds or financial conflicts of interest to operate, a state audit has found.

The audit released Tuesday also found discrepancies between some operators’ reported net proceeds and their tax payments on those wages, making it possible Colorado is losing tax revenue from the industry, The Gazette reported.

The audit said the Division of Gaming and Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission rushed to issue temporary licenses to meet a May 2020 start date for legalized sports betting, shortly after voters approved expanded gaming in November 2019.

The temporary licenses required preliminary background checks. But the division and commission have yet to clear a backlog to issue permanent licenses for those operators by completing more detailed criminal and financial background checks, the Office of the State Auditor found.

In March of this year, 35 of 39 operators — both casinos and internet operators — had temporary licenses, the report said.

Two Measures for California Legal Sports Betting Are Expected to Make the November Ballot - The details of each proposal are as follows (per Sports Betting Legal):

California Legalize Sports Betting On American Indian Lands Initiative: This proposal aims to legalize exclusive retail sports gambling options on reservations owned by federally recognized tribes. In addition to authorizing in-person sportsbooks, the measure also includes language to add roulette and dice games to the roster of approved casino activities. All earned revenues from event wagering would be taxed at a flat rate of 10%.

Legalize Sports Betting Revenue For Homeless Prevention Fund: This proposal takes a broad approach, asking voters to legalize in-person and mobile sports betting options. Sportsbook privileges would be extended to all of the state’s gaming entities. Eligible operators include card rooms, horse tracks, professional sports leagues, federally recognized tribes, and national corporations. The measure would also include provisions for expanded table games at casinos. In contrast to the initiative above, licensees would have to turn over 25% of earned revenues to the state.

Where is the Sweet Spot When it Comes to Sports Betting Advertisements? - Ontario's Twitch streamer Brad Rose (also known as Glimjii) asked the question of his followers:  "Anybody sick of the commercials for sports betting (in Ontario)?

One follower responded: "I’m at the point where they can just take my money if they will stop advertising. I don’t even want to win any bets. It’s slightly ridiculous."

Ontario just legalized single-game sports betting.  The commercial thing is new to those residing in that Canadian province but hardly to those living in the United States.  Even in states where the activity has not been regulated, the commecials are endless.  In states where it is regulated, you get the added pleasure of dealing with the sports betting ads on your commute to work via billboards and radio stations.  At least in other states like Florida the ads mostly only appear during sporting events.

John Holden, whose specialty research focuses on policy issues surrounding sports corruption, has written an opinion piece for LegalSportsReport, "Finding Happy Medium In Sports Betting Advertising Regulation"

He writes:

There is, in all likelihood, a point where advertising restrictions are such that they allow for information to flow to consumers and provide the necessary protections to ensure that those who should not be inundated with gambling information are not.

That equilibrium point, however, is likely not at either of the extremes currently being adopted in North America.

It seems most companies are wise enough to not inundate episodes of “Peppa Pig” with sportsbook ads, but that does not mean that children are not being exposed every time they watch sports or, in many cities, walk down the street.

In an ideal world, the industry itself would come up with advertising guidelines and self-police, though that has been an aspirational goal for at least four years and seems to have gained little traction.

NC Legislators Still Hopeful Sports Betting Bill Can Pass This Session - We are learning that the North Carolina House Judiciary Committee has yet to discuss the mobile sports betting measure during the 2022 legislative session.  They are slated to adjourn on June 30, 2022.  This only allows a few more weeks for SB 688 to pass through the House.  Up to 12 mobile sports betting licenses could be awarded if passed.  Currently, North Carolina allows only two tribal casinos to operate a retail sportsbook.

Rep. Jason Saine remains optimistic, according to Sports Handle.

“If everything goes according to plan, it should still be heard next week,” Angela Morando, Saine’s legislative assistant, told Sports Handle in an email. “Rep. Saine is hopeful that everything will stay on track from the rest of this short session.”

Hockey Gambling Expert's Personal Experience Shows Good and Bad of Sports Betting - Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic told CBC Sports' Morgan Campbell on the latest episode of Bring It In one of the first gambling rules to follow is "don't bet on sports".

Luszczyszyn said he's turned a profit in every season in which he's used a statistical model he created.  Nevertheless, he's had bad stretches and questions whether there is an addiction involved.

"It's hard to really discern when it's become a part of my job and career and because I know that I'm good at it, it's hard to know where that line is," Luszczyszyn said. "But I think for me going forward, knowing what I went through this year, knowing how dark things got, there are definitely signs and red flags of understanding where things are a bit too much and understanding and what point I need to stop."

Louisiana Sports Betting Proves Lucrative for Texas Gamblers - Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Johns told Gaming Today this week that West Louisiana is drawing mobile and retail sports bettors and casino business from Houston to Austin and beyond.

“They cater basically to that Houston/East Texas/San Antonio market. So they do a lot of business,” said Johns.

One of the sports bettors arriving from Teas is none other than Jim McIngvale, otherwise known as "Mattress Mack".  He's known for placing some of the biggest bets in online sports betting, most in Louisiana.

From Gaming Today:

GeoComply data Sunday, Jan. 30, the day of the NFL conference championships, shows up to 32 percent of Louisiana online sports betting that day took place in West Louisiana and areas of central Louisiana. The remaining 68 percent, according to GeoComply, came from the Baton Rouge and New Orleans metro areas. Joe Burrow, who won the national championship and Heisman Trophy at LSU, quarterbacked the Cincinnati Bengals to a 27-24 win over the Kansas City Chiefs to win the AFC title that day.

DraftKings CEO Says Pushing Parlays Will Rid Company of 'Sharp' Players - In a shock revelation June 6, DraftKings CEO Jason D. Robins divulged that his company is looking to reduce 'sharp' action while encouraging more hard-to-win parlay bets that entice recreational gamblers, all the while ensuring that DraftKings has no intention of "forcing" customers to make certain bets.  Okay, fine.

Robins spoke before the Goldman Sachs Travel and Leisure Conference.

"What we're not looking to do are things like taking money from people by forcing them into bets they don't wantor trying to direct them there," Robins said with a straight face.  "What we are doing is trying to get smart at eliminating the sharp action or limiting at least that we don't want as much and then also making sure that we have a high parlay mix because people do like that."

People also like taking fentanyl pills, because it makes them feel good.  Then they end up dropping dead.

Responsible gamblers, who just happen to be "sharp", are promoting a recent podcast that deals with mental illness and gambling.
