The importance of Tom Brady can’t be overstated enough. Without him the New England Patriots are closer to last place in the NFC East than to first, and they’ll look to avoid getting closer to the basement when they take on the winless New York Jets on Monday Night Football. The Pats haven’t been this bad in decades as they aim to break a four-game losing streak against the NFL’s favorite patsy. New England has won the last eight encounters with their division foe and is positioned as a 9.5-point favorite to extend that streak.  Bookmaker.eu is offering a generous welcome bonus (max bonus $1600).

Odds Analysis

The Jets are thinking they might actually have a chance to pick up their first win of the season. New England has dropped four in a row, though they played perhaps their best game of that stretch in last week’s 24-21 loss to Buffalo. Positioned as a 4-point dog, the Pats snapped a three-game ATS slide moving to 3-4 ATS for the year. New England opened as a 7.5-point favorite against the Jets with the line wagered to -9.5. New York earned its first payout in Week 7 covering the 9.5-point spread in an 18-10 loss to Buffalo. They failed to cover the mammoth 20-point line against the Chiefs last week falling to 1-7 ATS. The Jets haven’t scored more than 10 points in any of their previous four games cashing the UNDER in each one. The total has remained steady at 41.5.

The Cam Newton experiment hit a snafu. One week after tossing three interceptions and getting benched in an awful loss to the Niners, another mistake cost the Pats a chance at a victory in Buffalo. The Pats were in position for at least a game-tying field goal attempt however Newton was stripped of the football fumbling away a chance at a victory in the final minutes. Turnovers have proven costly with Newton throwing seven interceptions and only two touchdown passes this season.

New England’s run of success is unprecedented in today’s NFL and it’s amazing it lasted as long as it did. The question entering the season was who mattered most to the team Brady or Belichick? I can comfortably say at this point that Brady was the difference maker. The Pats run of 11 straight division titles and 17 consecutive campaigns with 10 or more wins is about to come to an end. But will their dominance over the Jets stop? The Pats have won eight straight, 11 of 12 and 17 of the last 19 meetings. They are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

Owning the league’s 30th ranked passing attack, the Pats are seeking solutions. The obvious is better play from Newton, but the corps of receivers needs help. With Julian Edelman and N’Keal Harry missing time the Pats traded for Isaiah Ford and signed Donte Moncrief to the practice squad. One thing the Pats need to do is take better care of the football. Their QBs have combined to throw 11 interceptions, the second-highest total in the league, and their 15 giveaways are the third-most.

New York Jets

The way things are going for the Jets they’ll probably finish the season 0-16, earn the No. 1 draft pick and watch Trevor Lawrence decide to return to Clemson for his senior season. I really can’t see this team winning a game with how pathetic the offense has been. Hell, they make the Bears look like a powerhouse. You’re just not going to win many games scoring 12 points, which is the team average (11.8) through eight weeks. That’s a touchdown less than the next worse team.

Maybe there’s something going on in the Meadowlands since the New York teams bring up the rear of the league’s scoring category. Five teams average more points per game than the Jets and Giants combined. The Jets haven’t scored more than 10 points in any of their last four games and were even shutout by the Dolphins. Over that span they are averaging 7.3 points. New York’s highest scoring game did come in primetime under the lights in a 37-28 loss to Denver.

It’s not all Sam Darnold’s fault, but he’ll take most of the blame since he’s the quarterback. Darnold expects to play after sustaining a shoulder injury last week. He’ll probably see this game as a challenge after tossing four picks in a 33-0 loss to New England last season on Monday Night Football. Darnold hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in three consecutive games.

There is some pride in the Jets locker room, I think. Still, they are just awful and despite New England’s recent woes, the Pats are a better team. New York has lost every game by at least eight points giving me confidence to back the visitors, even though the Pats have been shaky.

NFL Score Prediction: Patriots 26, Jets 13
