MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL BETTING:  BIGGEST MONEY LOSERS

DETROIT TIGERS -42.7 UNITS

The Detroit Tigers are a monumentally bad team.  Mercifully, the season will end before they can catch the 2003 Detroit Tigers who lost 119 games—the most in American League history.  Even so, the Tigers are 46-112 entering the final weekend of the season.  Detroit has lost -32.1 units at home and -10.6 units on the road.  That home loss is the worst in baseball but there are a few teams that lost more money on the road this year.  The Tigers lost -39 units against right handed starters but just -3.9 units against lefthanders.  Their record against lefthanders isn’t anywhere near the worst loss in the Majors—in fact there are 14 teams that lost more money against southpaws this year.  The only situational breakdown that shows a decent profit for the Tigers was against the AL East where they’ve gone 14-19 for a +4.0 unit profit.

BOSTON RED SOX -27.9 UNITS

The ‘public’ loves the Boston Red Sox.  So much so, they can lose -27.9 units despite being 83-77 to date simply because they’re overvalued just about every time they hit the field.  If you want to get even more specific, the public loves to bet on the Red Sox at Fenway Park.  They’ve struggled at home this year (37-40) which is why they’ve lost -27.2 units on their own field.  On the road, they’ve lost -0.7 units which is actually the 12th best in the Majors.  They’ve also lost -13.2 units against right handed pitchers and -14.7 units against left handers.  Their losses against LHP are the second worst in baseball right behind Seattle (-15.1 units).

SAN DIEGO PADRES -23.5 UNITS

The Padres are 70-90 at this point so they’ve lost a lot of money for bettors the ‘old fashioned way’--by losing a lot of games.  At Petco Park, they’ve lost -17.5 units which is the fourth worst home record in baseball.  On the road, their losses are a pedestrian -6.0 units which is only the 19th worst in the Majors. They also lost -16.4 units against RHP and -7.1 units against left handers.  Profitable situations are hard to find for the Padres though they did go 3-1 +1.5 units against the AL West and 2-1 +1 unit on artificial surface.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS -23.0 UNITS

The Kansas City Royals are a bad team and one of four that have lost more 100 games.  They’ve also lost -23 units for bettors.  At home, they’re 29-49 -16.1 units and could add to that with a couple more home dates before the season ends.  On the road, they’ve lost -6.9 units (#22 in MLB).  They’ve dropped -15.7 units against right handed pitchers and -7.3 units against left handed pitchers.  The Royals did make a profit of +4.1 units against the NL East by virtue of an 8-8 record and they were 1-0 this season as a -200 or higher favorite.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES -20.3 UNITS

Early in the season, the Baltimore Orioles looked as if they’d be the worst team in baseball this year.  That’s before the Detroit Tigers really went to work.  Instead, they’ll have to settle for being the second worst team in baseball. Baltimore lost -20.3 units for their ‘financial backers’ with most of the damage being done at Camden Yards where they lost -19.6 units.  That means they’ve lost only -0.7 units on the road which is actually tied with Boston for the 12th best road profit/loss in baseball.  They lost -13.9 units against right handed pitchers and -6.4 units against left handed pitchers.  The Orioles profitable situations this year?  They’re 3-2 +4.2 units in the first game of a doubleheader, 2-2 +2.3 units against the National League East and 20-36 in day games which earned them +1.8 units of profit.

LOS ANGELES ANGELS -17.3 UNITS

We’ll end our list with the Los Angeles Angels who lost -17.3 units.  We could actually keep going for awhile as there are 7 other teams that lost 10 or more units to this point of the season.  The Halos lost -9.7 units at home, -7.6 units on the road, -11.3 units against right handers and -6.0 units against lefthanders.  They were 4-0 against the NL West for +6.6 units of profit and 2-2 in dome stadiums which earned them +1.2 units.
