Sports Betting in Oregon
Immediately following a Supreme Court ruling that legalizes sports betting throughout the U.S. back in May, the Oregon State Lottery issued this statement:
"We have been interested and have been talking for some time now about reintroducing some level of sports-based play into our portfolio," said Matt Shelby, a public information manager for the Oregon Lottery.
But Oregon was one of a handful of states exempt from prior prohibition and did little to capitalize on that factor.
"We've got some history there with a lottery offering, but just exactly what a new offering could look like is too early to say at this point. But we're very interested."
There is some resistance to expanded sports betting in the state.
"Most observers of the field feel the U.S. is at the precipice on a new age of state-sponsored gambling where several lotteries will move into the digital realm and expand their game portfolio to include sports betting," said Jeff Marotta, president of Portland-based Problem Gambling Solutions Inc.
"If Oregon goes down this path ... it can have a profound impact on our state's culture and health. I am hopeful before this happens there will be a public debate and as a democratic society we will choose which course to take with our eyes wide open and fully informed."
