18 of 19 Iowa Casinos Now Have Sportsbooks

Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission administrator, Brian Ohorilko has confirmed that all but one of the state’s 19 casinos have a retail sports book in operations following the Wild Rose Casinos opening its venue last week.

Ohorilko says less than half of the casinos with sports betting licenses now have online wagering in place.

“From the mobile standpoint — we still just have the two companies that are doing business with seven Iowa casinos. Those two companies are William Hill and Elite Sportsbook,” Ohorilko says. He expects the remaining casinos will eventually have an online presence.

“I think what we will see is some online sites trickling in here the rest of the fall and into the winter — since all of the retail sites are currently open,” according to Ohorilko.

Those wishing to play online must first register in person on-site at a casino.

Montana Launches Public Consultation on Sports Betting

The Montana Lottery has launched a public consultation for state residents to comment on the new sports wagering rules after the office released the proposal in the monthly Montana Administrative Register late last week.

Some 1400 vendors could offer the activity. Any establishment with a liquor license or gambling license can qualify, and all for a mere $50 price point.   It is possible that sports wagering could come to fruition in Montana as early as December of this year.

Unlike in states where we are seeing physical full service sportsbooks popping up, Montana will feature kiosks for placing sports wagers.

Land-based establishments would allow for anonymous wagering, mobile would require registration.  Montana will be one of the few states to permit those 18 and up to place sports bets (as opposed to the 21 and up in most US states that offer the activity).

Intralot will oversee all sports betting in the state over the next four years at least.

Without a bidding process having been put in place, lawsuits are possible.  That is what is transpiring in Washington, DC and Rhode Island at the moment, thus delaying rollouts (DC entirely and Rhode Island mobile).

A public hearing will take place on October 28th.

Sports betting in Montana could prove especially lucrative during the college football season with a massive loyal fan base for local state teams, none of which are widely wagered on nationally.

Harrah's and Horseshoe Casinos Fined $50,000 for Underage Gambling Violations

Harrah’s and Horseshoe casinos in Council Bluffs have been fined a total $50,000 following two incidents of allowing those under the age of 21 to gamble.

The fines were levied last week by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, said Brian Ohorilko, the commission’s administrator. Under Iowa law, no one under 21 is allowed on gambling floors.

The companies did self-regulate the violations.

Harrah’s was cited for an incident that took place April 8, in which a young woman and her adult female companion entered the casino at 6:25 p.m. without being asked for identification.  One of the women played the slot machines.  Hours later it was revealed she was 20 years old.

A second incident involved a male individual whose ID turned out to be forged.  He played slot machines and consumed 13 alcoholic beverages.

When he was asked to leave because of what a Gaming Commission document described as “inappropriate contact” with a female patron, “K.C.” told security officers that he was underage. He was detained in the parking lot by Council Bluffs police.
