Guardians Team Analysis

"While Shane Bieber, Aaron Civale and Zach Plesac were injured, new arms emerged. That's a good thing, but the biggest question about the Guardians in 2022 is their offense. It was pitiful last year, and heading into the lockout, nothing had been done to improve it outside of exercising José Ramírez's $12 million option for 2022." - Athlon Sports

No Offense, Two Great Plays Ruin a Good Day of Pitching for the Cleveland Guardians

The Guardians, with the exception of rookie Steven Kwan, did nothing offensively for nine innings on Saturday at Kauffman Stadium, writes Paul Haynes of Cleveland.com.

Royals relievers Dylan Coleman, Amir Garrett, Taylor Clark, Josh Staumont and Snider combined for four innings of scoreless ball with five strikeouts.

While the Guardians scored a grand total of one run from Friday through Saturday, they had already scored 13 against the Royals by the 5th inning on Sunday.

Reds Team Analysis

The Reds endured a 12–20 record to close out lastseason, the fifth-worst mark in all of baseball.

After the season, Cincinnati cleaned house but failed to put in place the necessary fortifications.

The Reds would soon trade All-Star outfielder Jesse Winker and third baseman Eugenio Suarez to Seattle for outfielder Jake Fraley, pitcher Justin Dunn, left-handed pitching prospect Brandon Williamson, and a player to be named later.

One opposing scout offered: "There's talent here, for sure, but they play like a collection of players with no cohesion. It's a reflection of the front office — what's the plan? They invest in some guys but never really finish the job."

Cincinnati had lost their first two games against reigning World Series champs Atlanta to start the season.

RHP Hunter Greene, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2017 draft by Cincinnati, was making his much-anticipated major league debut on Sunday when he faces Anderson in the series finale. The hard-throwing Greene, 22, was 10-8 with a 3.30 ERA last year at Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville.  He was superb in his MLB debut.
