While you can already bet on sports online from your laptop or mobile device in Tennessee via a number of top offshore sportsbooks, the Volunteer State will soon offer up in-state sportsbooks.  Here are the things you need to know.

Tennnessee legalized sports betting after legislation passed both the senate (19-12) and house (58-37).

Governor Bill Lee opposes the legislation but will allow it to become law by not signing off on the measure.  As a result, sports gambling will automatically become law in mid-May.

Licensed sportsbook operators can begin servicing the public effective July 1, however, it is unlikely any businesses will be ready as licenses are yet to be doled out.

Anyone 21 or older can place a bet via their mobile devices or laptops provided they are not in industries where the outcome of a game can be influenced.

Bets can be placed anywhere within the state's borders.

Retail outlets will not be available in Tennessee, however, those in and around the Memphis area can travel to nearby Tunica, Mississippi at anyone of a handful of sportsbooks that operate there.  Mobile wagering in that state is only available via offshore sportsbooks and within the casinos proper.
