For a bit of time, the riderless horse looked competitive.

Jockey John Velazquez fell to the ground right out of the gate.

Video footage appeared to show the starter still had a hold of the horse when the gates opened. The incident was flagged with many believing Bodexpress would be declared a non-starter, but quickly cleared.

If Bodexpress had been declared a non-starter, full refunds would have been issued to people who bet him.
