A new report from Britain today shows that Caster Semenya, an 18-year old South African running sensation, has been found to have very high levels of testoterone. The test was conducted prior to the recently concluded track and field world championships. The report suggested that the abnormal test results ('she' has three times the normal amount of testosterone) prompted the gender inquiry.
The news doesn't get much better for Semenya. Her/His coach is Ekkart Arbeit, who was disgraced years ago for his lead role in the systematic doping programs of East German sports in the 1970s and '80s.
One of Arbeit's former athletes, Heidi Kreiger, accused Arbeit of giving her so many drugs that she was forced to become a man, undergoing sex-change operations and adopting a male identity as Andreas Kreiger,
It is also hypothesized that Semenya may have a condition called intersex disorder such as androgen insensitivity. Androgen insensitive individuals can have the genitalia of one sex, but have the chromosomal make up of the opposite sex. It is still unclear whether this would be considered an unfair advantage.
As the public waits a few weeks for the results of the gender test, another interesting devlopment has come to light.
Caster Semenya’s former school headmaster, Eric Modiba from Nthema Secondary in Limpopo, has been forbidden from commenting on his famous ex-pupil.
Sportsbook.com continue to offer the Semenya sex bet with odds of -175 that tests will show she is "all woman". If she's a "man" or "other" the payout would be US$12.50 for every US$10.00 bet.
