With 99.2 percent of the gambling public betting on disgraced Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner resigning, it appears that the intrade.com prediction market crowd was correct.  As of Thursday, June 16, sources close to Weiner were advising Politico.com of his decision to resign.

According to two sources, Weiner made up his mind to resign Wednesday night, and shortly after began making calls to inform them of his decision.

Weiner and DCCC chair Steve Israel — who had also called for his resignation — were in touch by phone and e-mail throughout the day on Wednesday. It was during a phone conversation toward the tail end of the White House picnic on Wednesday night when Weiner told Israel he would resign, according to a Democratic aide. Israel gave (Minority House Leader Nancy) Pelosi his phone so she could get word from Weiner firsthand.

Speaking to reporters Thursday morning, Pelosi said that she would not address the Weiner scandal yet.

“It’s my understanding that later in the day, he’ll be having a press conference, and after that, I’ll have a statement available,” Pelosi said.

The Weiner resignation comes amidst a scandal whereby the married Congressman sent lewd photos of his crotch to various women via his Twitter page.  Weiner initially denied sending the photos then later admitted doing so.  He also announced a desire to seek treatment.
