Hideki Matsuyama of Japan is favored to have the best finish among the Asian contenters at this year's Masters. He would pay out $200 on a $100 bet or $20 on a $10 bet.
Matsuyama is the first-ever Japanese professional golfer to win a men's major golf championship – the 2021 Masters Tournament and, as such, is the reigning champion of this tournament.
The 23-year-old is a three-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour and has two top-10s on the PGA TOUR this season.
Unless he wins again, Matsuyama is set to end his reign as the Masters champ.
“Then last week in Texas it was a little sad because I knew that was going to be the last time that I was going to be announced as the defending Masters champion,” Matsuyama said through his interpreter Tuesday at Augusta National Golf Club. “So it kind of made me feel, hey, I need to go out and win it again so I can continue that highlight.”
But he does have one regret about his reign.
“I just spent a year looking at it,” Matsuyama said about the green jacket. “I haven’t really worn it that much, but I look at it a lot.
“And now I wish I would have worn it more.”
Korean golfer Sungjae Im is tied with the second shortest odds to finish tops among the Asian field along with fellow countryman Si Woo Kim. Each pays $275 to $280 on a $100 bet.
Im was Rookie of the Year for the 2018–19 PGA Tour, and got his first PGA Tour victory at The Honda Classic in March 2020.
Kim won the 2017 Players Championship to become the youngest ever winner of the event at age 21.
