OAKLAND PARK, Fla (Gambling911.com) - Canada takes on South Korea Wednesday as a massive underdog that pays out $900 for every $100 bet should they upset South Korea in this Little League World Series game.
Canada is represented by Little Mountain Little League of Vancouver, British Columbia. They were perfect 8-0 at the Canadian championship.
Sha Hassko is immediately interesting. He's listed at 5-foot-10, making him one of Canada's biggest players, and he's a pitcher/first baseman. He also homered during Little Mountain's run through the Vancouver District 1 tournament.
But make no mistake about it, South Korea is the team to beat here. They are the favorites to win the international bracket.
South Korea is represented by West Seoul (B) Little League, which went 6-0 in the Asia-Pacific tournament. They defeated defending regional champion Chinese Taipei 3-1 in the championship game to reach Williamsport.
South Korea has considerably more LLWS pedigree than Canada. The country has previously won the Little League World Series in 1984, 1985 and 2014. This is West Seoul's second appearance and South Korea's eighth overall.
Seven of its 12 players are officially listed as pitchers: Ji Hoo Lee, Seo Jun Park, Ki Hyun Jung, Ji Wan Kim, Jae Hyun Maeng, Ji Hwan Hong and Ju Won Kim.
That pitching depth could become extremely valuable as the tournament progresses.
Hyun Maeng is a 5-foot-8 pitcher/first baseman, the tallest player on the Korean roster, and gives them a potentially imposing power/pitching combination.
Betting on this year's Little League World Series is not without controversy.
The Little League World Series issued the following statement to Gambling911.com:
"Little League International stands by its statement first issued last year that there is no place for betting on Little League games and players or any youth sports competition. Little League is a trusted place where children are learning the fundamentals of the games and all the important life lessons that come with having fun, celebrating teamwork, and playing with integrity, and no one should be exploiting the success and failures of children playing the game they love for their own personal gain."
"We're not here to say whether gambling on 10-, 11- and 12-year-olds is right or wrong, that's up for you to decide (and possibly write about), we're just delivering the information," BetOnline Brand Manager Dave Mason tells Gambling911.com.
