IRS May Require Claiming Gambling Winnings of $600 or More

LAS VEGAS (Associated Press) - The IRS says a $600 slot machine or bingo jackpot might get its attention in the future, and the prospect has riled gamblers and the casino industry.

The agency requires reporting on a single jackpot or win that's $1,200 or more for federal income-tax purposes. But it's floating the possibility of cutting that threshold in half.

A reportable keno win also could be lowered. The threshold for that game is now $1,500.

The UK’s biggest bookmaker, William Hill, is refusing to pay out £1,000 on a 50p bet placed on the Rome Masters.

Julius Ndlovu, a student nurse, placed a bet on the Swiss tennis star to win a set 6-3 during his Rome Masters match against Tomas Berdych after spotting odds of 2,000-1 on William Hill's website, the Independent reported Monday.

That bet came through a winner but Hill called those “ridiculously high odds” a “palpable error”.
