Poker Pros Dropping Like Flies as Sites Scale Down: UltimatePoker, PokerStars

UltimatePoker.com is the latest online poker site to slash its professional poker team, this time in half.  

Gone are Phil Collins (no relation to the famous singer), Jeremy Ausmus, Lauren Kling and William Reynolds. 

2012 One Drop winner Antonio Esfandiari and Jason Somerville remained on the Ultimate Poker roster.

The news comes as PokerStars has begun to shrink its Latin American pro roster.

Full Tilt Poker Pros Could Recover From ‘Black Friday’ Losses

Claims Administrator, the Garden City Group, has announced that former pros of the online poker site Full Tilt Poker could qualify to receive payments due following that company’s abrupt April 2011 exit from the US market.

The company shut its doors soon after but was eventually resurrected by PokerStars, which entered into an agreement with US authorities to facilitate payment to players affected by the closure.

Borgata’s $9.6 million Lawsuit Against Phil Ivey May Take a Year to be Heard

A $9.6 million claim filed against big name poker pro Phil Ivey will likely be delayed at least another year.

Ivey is being used by Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel and Casino over an alleged playing card scam.  The suit is claiming fraudulent winnings during a series of visits to the casino in 2012.

Hollywood actor Steven Segal is set to star in a new poker flick called “Gutshot Straight”, due to be released September 1, 2014.

The film is directed by Justin Steele and also stars George Eads, best known for his work on “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”.  Eads will be executive producing the project as well.

Bill to Legalize Online Poker in California is Dead in the Water for 2014

One of two bills introduced to legalize online poker in California has been pronounced dead for this year.

Democratic state Senator, Lou Correa of Santa Ana, a co-sponsor of the bill, said it needed to be shelved as there was not enough time left in the legislative session to get it for a vote. 

Think the US Congress is bad taking off the entire month of August and a portion of September?

The California legislature not only takes off in August, they take off the rest of the year.

Seminole Hard Rock Joins Forces With PokerStars

The Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida has partnered with the largest online poker room PokerStars for its Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open Championship (SHRPOC) series.

PokerStars players now have the opportunity to buy into the SHRPOC Main Event via their online account.

The Hard Rock event runs from August 14 thru September 3 and features a $10 million guaranteed event and a $100,000 Super High Roller event.

SBOBet.com Center of Paul Phua World Cup Betting Probe: Not Guilty Pleas Entered

Poker pro Paul Phua and his son Darren appeared in a federal court on Tuesday to answer to charges they ran an illegal gambling business out of the $25k a night Caesars Palace villas via the popular Asian handicapping betting site SBOBet.com.  Phua and six others are set to be arraigned on August 7.  The father-son-tandem may be deported back to their native Malaysia.  Both men pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.

Borgata Posts Quarterly Loss for Online Poker in New Jersey

The Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, partnered with bwin.party, has posted a quarterly operating loss of $1.8 million for the period of June 30.

It did, however, reach a “key milestone” by breaking even during the month of July.

The Borgata and bwin.party were widely seen as having gotten off to the strongest start in the newly opened New Jersey online gambling market through aggressive ad campaigns.  Ongoing payment processing issues, particularly with a high credit card decline rate, have stymied growth since that time.

WSOP Agonizing Defeat Caught on ESPN

ESPN has begun airing segments of the 2014 World Series of Poker, which concluded earlier in the month with the determination of the Final Nine to be held in November.

One of the more agonizing defeats was filmed featuring Connor Drinan, who was eliminated in the $1 million buy-in tournament Big One for One Drop.

Poker Pro Paul Phua and Son Released by ICE After Ivey Bailout

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released the father-son tandem of Paul and Darren Phua late Monday after poker pros Phil Ivey and Andrew Robl posted their initial $2.5 million bail.  Both had initially been charged with running an elaborate World Cup betting operation from a swank Las Vegas resort.  ICE had immediately taken them back into custody upon their release and threatened deportation back to Malaysia.

Poker pro Phil Hellmuth is once again living up to his nick “The Poker Brat”.

On Monday, he dressed as a baby for “Poker Night in America”.

“I am dressed up as a baby on the set of "Poker Night in America!" W a onesie, a bonnet, a bottle & a rattle,” Hellmuth proudly proclaimed on his Twitter page.

“Poker Night in America” features a two day celebrity event going from July 29-30 and taking place at the Maryland Live! Casino in Hanover, Maryland.  The full event started at the beginning of the month.

Phil Ivey, Andrew Robl Post $2.5 Million Bail for Paul and Darren Phua: Still Jailed

Phil Ivey this past weekend posted a portion of the $2.5 million in cash needed to bail out fellow poker pros, the father-and-son tandem of Wei Seng “Paul” Phua and Darren Phua.  Both men remained jailed heading into Monday however. Another poker pro, Andrew Robl, contributed $1.5 million of the $2.5 million bail.

Fabián Ortiz Wins LAPT7 Panama

The third stop, of the Seventh Season of the Latin American Poker Tour in Panama, has come to an end with a new favorable and double victory for Argentina and Fabián Ortiz. 550 players paid USD $ 1,700 to enter another stage of the regional tournament sponsored by PokerStars.net. Together they managed to make a prize pool of USD $ 826,925 to be distributed among the first 79 players. But it was Fabián Ortiz who took all the glory of the LAPT title again.
