Based on the placement region, sixteen teams were able to make it to the competition.  As announced by the LoL developer, 40 percent of the prize pool will go to the winner, while the runner takes 15 percent.  

The winner of the championship that year was the South Korean esports team SK Telecom T1.  The team played 3:2 against Samsung Galaxy in a final series of best of five. 

The winning team took home over $2million, while the second and third-place winners won $760, 500 and $380, 250 respectively.

League of Legends World Championship 2018 

The LoL World Championship 2018 took place in South Korea with a total prize pool of $6,450,000, which is significantly higher than the prize pool of the previous year.  The tournament started from October 1 to November 3; it was held across Korean cities of Incheon, Busan, Seoul, and Gwangju.   

It will interest you to know that more than 90 million viewers watched the event's opening ceremony. And over 200 viewers tuned in to watch the finals of the tournament. The 2018 LoL World Championship was the most-watched esports competition in history as it surpassed the Super Bowl viewership.

The International Dota 2 Championship 2014

Following the 2014 Dota 2 Championship's tremendous success, the organizers rolled out a collection of game cosmetics for the 2015 tournament.  This, combined with the large amount realized from viewership and sponsorships, led to a remarkable increase in prize pool, a whopping sum of $18, 429, 613, which also doubled as the previous price year's prize pool.

The Seattle-based team, Evil Genius, emerged the winner of the competition from a total of 16 participants. The winner of the tournament ended up as the third runner up in the previous year.  The team too away 36 percent of the prize pool, $6, 634, and 660. The team that came second earned a total of $2, 856, 590.  

The International Dota 2 Championship 2016 

The 2016 Dota Championship prize pool surpassed 20 million USD. It was held again in Seattle, and it started in June and ended in August.  

Digital Chaos and Wings Gaming competed in the final match for the grand prize. The Wings Gaming won the competition and was awarded a sum of $9, 139, 000, while the runner up took home $3, 427, 126.  Apart from the vast amount won by the team, they gained also gained popularity.
