Here are today's NHL Picks for Sunday, October 12, 2008.

Ron's Straight Up Record: 13 wins 11 losses for (54%)

*Note: Ron went 9-4 SU on Saturday

Phoenix vs. Anaheim

Ron's Comment: Don't be surprise if this line climbs to Anaheim -230, as the Coyotes are a young team and they are up against an intimidating veteran Ducks team who will be in a nasty mood coming off a lost in their first game of the year. Furthermore, when the Coyotes are a road team vs. a Division Opponent the last 5 years and they are playing in back to back games; The Coyotes are 4-12-2 SU in this role the last 5 seasons.

Prediction: Anaheim 4 Phoenix 1

Colorado vs. Edmonton

Ron's Comment: The question mark for the Avalanche this season will be their goaltending and they lost 5-4 in their home opener on Thursday vs. the Bruins. Ryan Smyth returns back to face his old friends on opening night and Edmonton is 13-5-3 (SU) in season openers at Rexall Place. Edmonton will most likely start Garon tonight and that's good news for Edmonton, as he's a solid goaltender and tough to beat. Nice spot for the Oilers, as they are 7-3 SU as a home favorite the last 3 years during the month of October.

Prediction: Edmonton 3 Colorado 2

San Jose vs. LA Kings

Ron's Comment: Perception will sucker in 75% of the betting public on the Sharks, as they are coming off a fresh 4-1 win over the Kings last night and because they won by 3 goals, the money will be coming in on the Sharks. Hard to blame them, but the Kings are in a great betting spot here, as they are 9-1 SU as a home team when playing in back to back games the last 3 years and 6-1 (SU) in the same role when coming off a road lost. Plus, one of my rules of thumb is to play against the team that won in game 1, as the Law of Average normally finds a way to balance things out. Plus, if you look at the board, this might be the best "value play" for an underdog, as the Kings are at home and the Avs are on the road!

Prediction: LA Kings 5 San Jose 4
