The NBA Rookie Challenge will take place Friday, 9:05 pm Eastern - TNT and our friends at SBG Global are presenting the following betting preview on this event.

The SBG Global Opening Line: Sophomores  -  5.5  ,  Total  251.5

The Sophomores will look to continue their domination of the Rookies as the two squads meet in the 2009 Rookie Challenge on Friday night in Phoenix, Arizona.  The game will be televised by TNT and will feature last year's Rookie of the Year, Kevin Durant from Oklahoma City for the Sophomores against the Rookies' Derrick Rose from Chicago who was the first pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Sophomores at Home.

Joining Durant on the Sophomores team is his teammate Jeff Green, Detroit's Rodney Stuckey, Atlanta's Al Horford, Los Angeles Clippers' Al Thornton, Philadelphia's Thaddeus Young, New York's Wilson Chandler, and Houston teammates Aaron Brooks and Luis Scola.  In addition to Rose, the Rookies have Memphis teammates O.J. Mayo and Marc Gasol, Portland's Greg Oden and Rudy Fernandez, Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook, the Clippers Eric Gordon, Miami's Michael Beasley and New Jersey's Brook Lopez.

Last season it was Daniel Gibson scoring 33 points to win the MVP award as the Sophomores routed the Rookies by a score of 136-109.  Durant led the Rookies with 23 points.

Looking at the NBA betting numbers we find that the Rookies and Sophomores have met a total of nine times and the Sophomores have won seven of the nine.  As you look at NBA betting for this game keep in mind that the game will be played in two 20-minute halves. In the unlikely event that the game goes to overtime, it will only be a two minute overtime.

SBG Global Current Line: Sophomores  -  5.5  ,  Total  251.5

No defense has been played recently in the Rookie Challenge.  Last year the teams combined for 245 points while the 2007 game saw 269 combined points.  The only game that was remotely low scoring in the last six years was in 2006 when the Sophomores won 106-96.

None of the recent Rookie Challenges have been close.  Sophomore blowouts have been the story of late.  The Sophomores have won by 27, 41, 10, 27, 24, and 20 points in the last six years.  Looking at this year's rosters it seems that the Rookies have a better chance with superstars like Rose and Mayo on the roster.

Iowa State: Are They The Underdogs To Look For In March Madness?

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
