Our friends at Bookmaker.com have released a whole series of Kentucky Derby matchups betting odds, some with enticing prices.  The wagering method employed here is that two horses are pitted against one another and the horse to place higher wins.

Advise pays $140 for every $100 bet should he beat General Quarters.  Both are long shots to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby yet this is among the best paying matchups.

Probably the matchup that will get the most attention (and therefore most betting action) is Dunkirk vs. I Want Revenge.  The later contender is posted as the favorite but not by much, with Dunkirt breathing down his back.  Typically, across the board, we are seeing I Want Revenge with 3/1 odds and Dunkirk coming in slightly longer than 4/1.

Should Dunkirk beat I Want Revenge, the payout would be $130 for every $100 bet.  I Want Revenge requires a fairly hefty risk, all things considered.  You'll have to bet $160 to win $100.  Gambling911.com advises against such a bet.

"The great thing about a Dunkirk vs. I Want Revenge showdown is that neither has to actually win the Derby to pay out," says Gambling911.com's Don Shapiro.

In this sense, Dunkirk is a pretty decent side bet to add to your 2009 Kentucky Derby wagering resume.

The best payout we could find among this year's Kentucky Derby matchups was Friesan Fire vs. I Want Revenge.  Should Friesan Fire come out ahead of I Want Revenge, the payout would be $150 for every $100 bet at Bookmaker.com.

"This is actually another good bet to place," says Shapiro.  "I Want Revenge is far from a ‘lock' to win the Derby."

How We Follow Horse Racing Has Completely Changed

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
